Menopausal Symptoms

Female menopausal symptoms, including pelvic pain, vaginal pain with intercourse, and vaginal dryness, can occur due to the hormonal changes that take place during menopause. Menopause is a natural biological process in women, typically occurring around the age of 45 to 55, when the ovaries stop producing eggs and the levels of estrogen and progesterone decline.

  1. Pelvic pain: Menopausal pelvic pain can result from various factors, such as changes in the pelvic organs and tissues, reduced elasticity of the pelvic floor muscles, and decreased estrogen levels. This pain may be intermittent or constant and can range from mild to severe.

  2. Vaginal pain with intercourse (dyspareunia): Vaginal pain during intercourse is a common symptom of menopause and can be caused by vaginal dryness, thinning of the vaginal tissues (vaginal atrophy), and decreased lubrication. The lack of estrogen affects the health and elasticity of the vaginal walls, leading to discomfort or pain during sexual activity.

  3. Vaginal dryness: Reduced estrogen levels during menopause can result in decreased lubrication and moisture in the vaginal area. Vaginal dryness can cause itching, burning, and a general feeling of discomfort.

Acoustic shockwave therapy (also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT) is a non-invasive medical treatment that has been used to address various conditions, including musculoskeletal problems and sexual function. While it is more commonly associated with conditions like erectile dysfunction in men, it can also be applied to women experiencing menopausal symptoms.

Focused shockwave therapy involves the use of low-intensity sound waves targeted at specific areas of the body. The shockwaves stimulate the body's natural healing response and promote tissue regeneration by increasing blood flow, promoting the growth of new blood vessels, and stimulating the release of growth factors.

When applied to menopausal symptoms such as pelvic pain, vaginal pain with intercourse, and vaginal dryness, focused shockwave therapy aims to improve blood circulation and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which can help restore the health and functionality of the pelvic tissues and vaginal walls. The increased blood flow can enhance tissue hydration and improve the elasticity of the vaginal walls, thereby reducing pain and discomfort.

It's important to note that results may vary depending on any other conditions or disorders that may also be the cause.  We will work closely with your primary care provider to ensure this therapy is appropriate for you.

Shockwave therapy is only one part to managing the symptoms experience from menopause.  Please discuss all your options with your primary care provider.
